KL-London flight – which airline is the cheapest?

Recent experience on Malaysia Airlines, Air Asia X and Emirates

Which airline is the cheapest for KL-London economy class return trip? My first thoughts, it must be Air Asia X, but with lots of catches, hidden expenses etc . But in reality you would be surprised... Lets compare the most recent experience by my friends and family.

Malaysia Airlines (www.malaysiaairlines.com) – my sister came to London for two weeks recently in May, she paid RM2,100 all in (tax, charges etc). She got her tickets online, normal purchase, she bought it in April about a month before travelling date. Pros; food and in-flight entertainment included and direct flight to London Heathrow, ie nearer and cheaper to central London.

Air Asia X (www.airasia.com) – my friend came to London for his exams 2 weeks back. He paid RM2,300 all in (tax, charges, food, blanket, in-flight entertainment). Pro; direct flight. Cons; you have to pay extra for food and in-flight entertainment, land at Stansted airport – so far away to central London and if you take taxi it will cost you an extra £75-100..

Emirates (www.emirates.com) – my friend came to London for 3 days last week for her wife graduation ceremony. You would be surprised, he paid RM1,600 all in. Yes that includes everything (tax, charges, food, in-flight entertainment, blanket etc). And it lands at Heathrow, yes London Heathrow. At RM1,600 return? That cannot be true... It’s true, but there is a catch. It is not a direct flight, you have to transit in Dubai. Transit time? 9 hours each leg!!! There you have it, there is no free lunch here. The advantage is my friend went out and visit Dubai during the 9 hour transit, so kind of 2 in 1 trip.

Conclusion? It depends on what you are looking for and your time flexibility. If you have the time and never been to Dubai before, I would recommend for you to try Emirates. It’s the cheapest for sure and the economy class food is superb! (my own experience). Full 3 course meal, with chocolate to go with your coffee at the end! If you are in a rush, Malaysia Airlines is the answer as it goes direct to Heathrow but I never like the food and service. Air Asia X, it could be cheap, you need to book early though and price-in all the extras. One thing I don’t like is that they fly to Stansted, is that still in London?

My advice, plan your trip in advance. Good offer is out there somewhere waiting to be discovered!
Do justice to yourself by demanding value for your hard earned ringgit...

This is very useful info.

This is very useful info. Will definitely check out Emirates next time I'm going to London to visit my brother.

How far is Stansted from

How far is Stansted from central London?

Stansted Airport is about 40

Stansted Airport is about 40 miles outside Central London. Journey time by car/taxi will take approximately 70 to 90 minutes depending on the traffic. Although there is a Stansted Express train that takes you from the airport to Liverpool Street station (on the east side of central London) in 45 minutes. You can find the detail on how to get to and from London for Stansted Airport. Hope this helps!

That's true. I've never been

That's true. I've never been to Dubai before. When is the best time to go there? Is it very very hot there? What about the cost to visit Dubai for a day like? Thanks! Danny C

The best time to visit Dubai

The best time to visit Dubai would be between November to March, when the weather is rather mild and you can enjoy the outdoor activities. In summer I found the weather to be too hot (more than 40 degrees) and you'll end up being in the malls or in your hotel room.

Dubai, in general, is on the expensive side. The hotel rates are quite similar to that of hotels in London, and sometimes can be more especially if you opt to stay along the Jumeirah beach area (more than GBP100/RM570/AED600 per night - sorry Danny, not sure where you are from). However, you can find some good deals on the Deira side.

Food wise, there are plenty of selection in Dubai. I recommend trying out Yemeni food, called Nasi Mandi (similar to Briyani). If you are from Malaysia, food prices are generally about 50-70% more than what you would pay in Malaysia.

This being said, I do enjoy Dubai and it is worth visiting. Enjoy!!
